Lauantaina 22.2. Arctic
Design Show’n lavalla nähdään muun muassa viisi opiskelijoiden kansainvälisen
Japani-Suomi työpajan tuotosta. Työpajaan osallistuivat Lapin yliopiston
Taiteiden tiedekunnan opiskelijat Tytti Taipale ja Monami Saeki. Seuraavassa
Tytin ja Monamin mietteitä intensiivisestä viikon kestäneestä työpajasta.
About the workshop
Japan-Finland -workshop is the collaboration project
between Yamaguchi prefectural University and the University of Lapland and was
held for the fifth time in the Pöykkölä campus, Rovaniemi in November of
2013. The goal was to create some
innovative outdoor clothing through creative designing process - including mood
board working and sketching - in international co-operation between Japanese
and Finnish, and this time also with Slovenian, students. Cultural exchange
between universities, for example in the form of workshop based co-operation,
can give birth to new and interesting clothing designs and creative uses of
materials.
Tytti's experiences
In the beginning of
the workshop, we were divided into three pairs and one group of three. I, Tytti
Taipale, 26-year-old master's degree student in clothing design, was paired
with a 20-year-old Japanese girl clothing design student Masayo. She didn't
really speak English and my Japanese skills being barely existing we had quite
a challenge in the communication department.
She was doing her best understanding my English, and I think we
succeeded well in our co-operation.
Besides the language barrier, it was very pleasurable to work with
Masayo since she was always very positive, excited and helpful and doing her
best understanding my English. The week with Japanese students and professors
was a short culture trip for all of us Finns (and Slovenians); we could change
thoughts also on other issues besides design and have a taste of Japanese food
in the form of shabu-shabu, Japanese hot-pot dish, and snacks.
Monami's experiences
Monami's experiences
I participated in Japan-Finland-workshop, which is
the collaboration project between Yamaguchi Prefectural University and the
University of Lapland and was held for the fifth time. There were four students from University of Lapland, two students
from university of Maribor and three students from Yamaguchi
Prefectural University in the workshop and we created multicultural and
innovative clothing. My group
created the women’s clothing, which we got inspirations from our own cultures
and our experiences in Rovaniemi. We designed the functional clothing, which is
comfortable to move and also fits to women with wide ranges of age. Also we
thought carefully about how we can use materials effectively, such as wool and
reindeer skin from Lapland and denim and Yanai-jima cotton from Yamaguchi.
